Frequently Asked Questions
Is LASIK a safe technique?
LASIK is a surgery that is approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is known for being a very strict institution, after a long period of monitoring, and is considered very safe by all health authorities.
Will LASIK prevent any other treatments or surgeries that may be performed on my eye in the future?
No.
How do I know if I am suitable for LASIK?
For this, you must first undergo a very detailed eye examination. Numbers should be measured precisely with drop-free and drop examinations. Then, the eye structure is examined in more detail with corneal topography and pachymetry. As a result of these examinations and tests, your doctor will decide whether you are suitable for laser.
What is the success rate in LASIK?
First of all, it is necessary to define the criteria for success. The aim is to bring the patient to a number that does not require wearing glasses such as 0, 0.25, 0.50 with a single intervention. The success rate is 98% in numbers less than 8, while it is 95% in higher numbers. If regression, that is, an increase in numbers, occurs, the aim is to reset it with a second intervention. The success rate in second treatments with a probability of 2% and 5% is 85%.
Who can have LASIK?
* Ages 18-65 (for younger people, glasses numbers must not have changed for the last year)
* Myopes up to -12.0 degrees.
* Hyperopes up to +7.0 degrees.
* Myopic and hyperopic astigmats up to 6 degrees.
Who cannot have LASIK?
- In Keratoconus (when there is a disease that causes thinning and deformation in the cornea)
- Those whose corneal tissue is not thick enough
- Those with uncontrolled uveitis (inflammation inside the eye)
- Patients with uncontrolled eye pressure (very rare)
- Severe "dry eye" cases
- Pregnant and postpartum women
- Those with problems such as advanced diabetes and kidney disease
How long before the surgery should contact lens use be stopped?
Those who use soft lenses should stop using their lenses 1 week before, and those who use gas permeable semi-hard lenses should stop using their lenses 3 weeks before.
How does the surgery take place and what do I need to do during the surgery?
You will be given a sedative approximately 45 minutes before the surgery. This eliminates the excitement of the surgery and increases compliance. Immediately before entering the laser room, anesthetic drops are instilled into your eyes, so you will not feel any pain. After lying on the laser table, your eyelids are wiped with antiseptic solution and covered with a plastic cover. A special wire is attached to separate your eyelids and you cannot close your eyes even if you want to. Then, you will see the bright light of the microscope and a green point light in the middle. The doctor will ask you not to take your eyes off this green light during the surgery. Being comfortable and not tensing yourself will shorten the duration of the surgery considerably.
What happens if I move my eye during the laser?
Since the laser is actively locked to your eye thanks to the "eye-tracker", the treatment continues uninterrupted.
How long does the surgery take?
The treatment is completed in 4 minutes per eye.
What are the things I should and should not do after the surgery?
After the surgery, antibiotic drops are instilled into your eyes and covered with pads to prevent dust from entering on the way. You can remove the pads when you get home. Blurred vision is a completely normal situation. You may have burning, stinging, and watering in your eyes for a few hours. Pain is rare, but if it occurs, it will pass with a simple pain reliever. You should not touch, scratch or rub your eyes with your hands. Do not take a bath or wash your face. Do not watch television or read. Use your antibiotic drops as directed by your doctor. You will need to have a short check-up the next morning, and it is extremely important.
- Drops are used for 1 week and then stopped.
- You should avoid rubbing your eyes hard (the first month is very important).
- It is not recommended to enter the pool and sea for 2 weeks.
- It is not recommended to wear eye makeup for 1 week
- You can take a bath and shower after the control the day after the treatment, but avoid getting soap and shampoo in your eyes in the first few days.
Will my eyes be zeroed immediately?
The day after the operation, most patients achieve satisfactory visual acuity. It may take a few weeks for the numbers to settle completely. Myopic patients will be slightly hyperopic the next day. This is temporary and may cause difficulty reading in the first few days.
Hyperopic patients, on the other hand, become myopic the next day. This is also temporary. There may be blurring in the distance in the first few weeks. It is expected that the numbers will become stable at your control after 1 month.
When will my controls be done?
After the first day's control; You will be asked to come for control in the 1st, 6th and 12th months. Then, one control per year is sufficient.
What are the features of the laser device used in your hospital?
The Wave Light - Allegretto Excimer Laser Device (Germany) that we use is 4th generation and has superior features.
It performs the correction with a 0.95 mm diameter flying spot laser beam.
Its speed is quite high compared to other lasers (400Hz.), and thanks to its fast treatment capability, it provides a smoother treatment surface. It also has a special scanning tracking system (eye - tracker) at a speed of 250 Hz. Even if the patient moves his/her eye during the treatment, the treatment continues uninterrupted.
In addition, the ability to adjust the rotation (cyclotorsion) around the central axis of the eye and the kappa angle (the angle between the center of the pupil and the visual axis) also ensures that the treatment is done in the correct area.
Can I go to work the next day?
Although some of our patients go to work the next day, experts recommend resting for 2 or 3 days.
How many people have had this surgery?
Our expert team, under the management of Dr. Sinan Göker, has performed 50 thousand eye surgeries. To give examples from the world, 960 thousand laser vision correction surgeries were performed in America in 1999, and this number reached 1.5 million eyes in 2000.
