Smart lenses, frequently mentioned recently, are actually multifocal and trifocal intraocular lenses in ophthalmology. These intraocular lenses, known as "Smart Lenses," have been used for a long time in appropriate cases during cataract surgeries. Intraocular lenses are divided into monofocal (single focus), multifocal (multiple focus), and trifocal (3 focus).

In cataract surgery, patients who receive a monofocal lens generally do not need glasses for distance vision after the surgery but will require glasses for near reading.

Those who receive a multifocal lens do not need to wear glasses for both distance and near vision. People who have a multifocal lens implanted during cataract surgery can read books, use computers, and watch television without glasses and can continue their daily lives without glasses.

The doctor decides which lens is suitable for the patient during cataract surgery based on detailed examinations and the structure of the eye.

What are Smart Lenses (Intraocular Lenses)?

Everyone has a natural lens inside their eye. This lens is transparent and elastic. With each look at near and far, this lens changes shape due to its flexibility, focusing on the viewed distance. Thus, both far and near are seen clearly.

As we age, the natural lens in our eye first loses its elasticity, cannot change shape when looking near, and becomes unable to focus on near objects. At even later ages, it loses its transparency, and cataracts form.

Our own lens, which usually loses its elasticity after the age of 40, can be replaced with a new one. The natural lens that loses its properties and becomes deformed, that is, old, is replaced with an artificial lens called a Smart Lens (intraocular lens). This new lens now has the ability to focus on far, intermediate, and near distances, providing a clear vision at every distance.

The eye number of a patient who receives a Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens) does not progress further. Cataract surgery is performed once, and cataracts do not form in the eye again.

Who is a Suitable Candidate for Smart Lenses?

Generally, people over the age of 40 who have vision problems at a distance or near, or both, and who want to get rid of their glasses for life are candidates for this operation. The starting age for cataracts has now fallen earlier due to environmental conditions. Each eye fitted with a multifocal lens can see both far and near.

In younger patients, if the eye number is too high to be corrected with laser, Smart Lens treatment can be applied.

If a person has cataracts and wants to see both far and near without glasses after cataract surgery, smart lenses are still the first choice.

Smart lenses can also be applied to people who have had their eye number corrected with laser before, but are now experiencing problems with seeing far or near after cataracts have formed.

How are Smart Lenses (Intraocular Lenses) Implanted?

The operation is performed on two eyes on different days. A few days or 1 week is given between the two eyes, depending on the patient's conditions. The procedure takes about 10 minutes for each eye. The eyes are anesthetized with eye drops. General anesthesia (except in special cases), fainting, or overnight stay in the hospital is not required. It is a painless operation. The natural lens inside the eye is removed, and a smart intraocular lens is implanted in its place. After the surgery, the eye is covered with a bandage, the patient goes home, the eye remains closed with a bandage that night, and the bandage is removed by the doctor during the control the next day. The patient starts to see on the same day and returns to normal life.

The same procedures are applied to the other eye within a few days. Apart from using drops for a while, weekly and monthly check-ups are performed.

What are the Advantages of Smart Lenses?

They provide clear vision at near, far, and intermediate distances in the eyes and are known as lifetime smart lenses.

The most important feature of smart lenses is the clarity they provide at intermediate distances. Clear vision is obtained at distances where vision quality is most important, such as computer usage distance, television viewing distance, and kitchen counter access distance.

The quality and type of intraocular lens placed in the eye determine the patients' eye health and vision quality after the operation.

It helps to eliminate vision disorders after surgery along with cataracts. There are special types for myopia-hyperopia-astigmatism disorders and eye structure in the person's eye.

A clear view is provided in the eye.
